Cross-country ski trails at Willow Creek (formerly South Pass) have been cut out by Forest Service Trail Crews.
The trail system had largely been abandoned due to access issues. Forest Service employees found an alternate access from Highway 28 that utilizes USFS roads to re-link the once cut off trail system. The trail-head is located about 34 miles west of Lander (across from the main entrance to South Pass City).
The trails, about 15 miles of them - have been brushed out, mapped, re-blazed, and will have occasional grooming. The district is hoping to obtain the old groomer from the Lander Nordic Skiing Association to establish a great base for snow shoers’ and skiers alike.
Particularly pleasing to pet owners is that pets will be allowed on these trails. Pets are not welcome at the Beaver Creek Ski area - due to safety concerns, regular grooming expenses, and to keep the area competition ready. So the new “old” system has appeal for a more traditional romp through the forested glades on the remote southern tip of the Winds.
The area is a work in progress. This winter recreation staff will continue to add blazes, look for additional routes for expansion, and ideally provide grooming after snow storms. One challenge was repairing an old bridge that crosses Willow Creek. The bridge that had once served as a route for a snow cat has a broken stringer - posing a safety hazard. FS crews used two Handy Man Jacks to lift the broken stringer and then reinforced it with log sills - to make it usable for another season. A new bridge will be needed in the future. Wildlife abounds. Moose, bear, elk, deer, cougars, martins, birds, ermine, coyotes, winter hare, and porcupines live here - so keep pets safe by not allowing them to harass wildlife.
