Old Coach's Race

The Old Coach’s Race is back!

Join us for a minimally organized Lander Nordic tradition at the Beaver Creek Nordic Ski Trails on December 30th. This event is an excuse to gather in the cold wearing our old race suits, tutus, capes, or other fancy underwear while trying to go really fast (or not) on the snow with expensive sticks on our feet. There will be a 5k and 10k course with one mass start (commencing at noon). Start and finish will be at the yurt and race organizers will try medium hard to ensure everyone gets timed correctly. “Awards” will be given in both skate and classic categories and shall be comprised of random items found in Web’s garage.

This event is free and open to all ages. If you have never “raced” before, this event is especially free to you, and we hope you come. See details below

Registration will take place on site starting at 11am

Old Coaches Race/Event - 2023 Edition

Dang near the 15th annual, although we missed some d/t laziness. Free!

History:

The 1st OCR was about 2008.   On Dec. 24th we thought it would be fun to have an informal citizens race.  On Dec. 26th we had a very informal citizens race.  That level of preparation and organization has persisted since (except when we lacked preparation.) And it’s free!

We’ve had future worldcup racers and 4 year olds, so the field is open.

Race Goals:

To get a variety of skill levels skiers to enjoy and test themselves at whatever distance and technique they desire.  (and to beat Norm)

Race Rules:

Be serious now, you really think that we thought that far?  Rules change year to year, and sometimes even change during the race.  The primary rule is that if you don’t act like you enjoyed it, you are disqualified.  {The jury makes the decisions, and I’m the jury, but I’m prone to peer pressure and bribes.]  You can pay if you want!

This years Event:

Sign up at the yurt about 11:30 AM.  Saturday Dec. 30th. It’s Free!

Pick a distance, 1 lap = 5 km, 2 laps = 10 km.

Pick classic or skate.

Mass start at noon-ish.  Start and Finish at Yurt!

Sue Cessna is the chief timer, but really we’re just hoping to get placing accurately.  Times will be rounded to nice numbers.

The course will be marked with V-boards at the junctions.  But basically go CW from yurt, to 5 corners, back on Bear Claw, up Pipeline, around Pipedream, down Pipeline, around Inner Pipeline, and back to Yurt.  If you don’t like the route, pick another (ie take shorcuts).

There may be other people skiing the trails, so be alert and ready to yell, stop, or cuss..

If you want to pass somebody, it’s your responsibility to safely do so.  None of this hogwash about yelling “track” and expecting somebody to yield.  Besides, some of us are almost deaf. And it’s free!

Awards:

I still need to rummage through my garage, but I’m sure I’ll find some stuff that I want to unload, oops, I mean donate to some worthy skiers.  FYI, anybody nice enough to finish after I do is more likely to get something decent, but don’t rely on it. And it’s free!

Results:

May be posted online sometime in the next year.  Just depends. And it’s free!
